Speed Converter
Convert between mph, km/h, knots, m/s, ft/s, and more.
Speed conversions are a daily necessity for international travelers, pilots, mariners, and motorsport enthusiasts. The gap between miles per hour and kilometers per hour has caused real-world accidents when drivers misread speed limits crossing a border, and it tripped up the Mars Climate Orbiter mission in 1999. Whether you're driving, flying, sailing, or doing physics homework, getting speed units right matters.

Standards Note: Knots Are Tied to the Nautical Mile
NIST Handbook 44 notes that the international nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters, which is why 1 knot is fixed at 1.852 kilometers per hour.

mph vs. km/h: The Daily Divide
The United States and the United Kingdom post road speed limits in miles per hour (mph). Most other countries use kilometers per hour (km/h). One mph equals approximately 1.609 km/h. A common US highway speed limit of 65 mph is about 105 km/h; a European motorway limit of 130 km/h is about 81 mph. Many modern vehicles have speedometers showing both units, and most GPS navigation apps can display either. The approximation "km/h โ mph ร 1.6" is accurate enough for everyday driving decisions.
Knots, Mach, and Scientific Units
Aviation and maritime navigation use knots (nautical miles per hour). One knot equals 1.852 km/h or 1.151 mph. Wind speeds in weather forecasts may be given in knots (especially in aviation) or m/s (scientific reports) or km/h (consumer media). Mach number expresses speed relative to the speed of sound in air โ approximately 343 m/s (1,235 km/h / 767 mph) at sea level and 20ยฐC. Supersonic aircraft like the Concorde cruised at Mach 2 (approximately 2,470 km/h). In scientific and engineering contexts, meters per second (m/s) is the SI unit for speed.
| Speed | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 60 mph | 96.6 km/h |
| 100 km/h | 62.1 mph |
| 1 knot | 1.852 km/h / 1.151 mph |
| 1 m/s | 3.6 km/h / 2.237 mph |
| Mach 1 (sea level) | 343 m/s / 1,235 km/h |
| Speed of light | 299,792 km/s |
Tips for Accurate Speed Conversion
The most common mistake is forgetting that mph and km/h differ by about 60%, not 10% or 100%. Driving 100 mph in a km/h country means driving 161 km/h โ well above most highway limits. For precise conversions, use the exact factor of 1.60934. For quick mental math, multiply mph by 1.6 (slight overestimate) or divide km/h by 1.6. Always check which unit system a vehicle's speedometer is calibrated to before driving in an unfamiliar country.
